Detroit 'fresh city' for Thanksgiving parade

Some figure skaters Canadians are used to rooting against will be the grand marshals of Thursday's morning Thanksgiving parade in Detroit.

Meryl Davis and Charlie White are the ones who took the gold medal in ice dancing away from local favourites Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir earlier this year.

Both pairs train in Metro Detroit.

Shelly Rodriguez will be driving one of the floats. She said she loves watching people's faces.

"They get so much pleasure out of seeing the floats, even on rollout, and it's fun to be able to wave at these people, and they want to see you," said Rodriguez.

Tony Michaels, the CEO of the Parade Corporation, said the city feels different this year.

"We are a new fresh city, and this opportunity for everybody to gather Thanksgiving morning at the parade is a celebration of this city," said Michaels. "Thus, come and see the progress. Come and see what Detroit is becoming."

The parade will feature dozens of floats, marching bands and balloons. It will run along Woodward Avenue, starting at 9 o'clock.
