Erin Osmond, teacher accused of sexually exploiting student, in court

The 29-year-old teacher charged with sexual exploitation of a Watrous, Sask. high school student was in court Thursday for day three of her trial.

Erin Osmond is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student. The court heard that she began a romantic relationship with a 16-year-old student that lasted for several months.

In court Thursday, a number of sexually-charged texts between the student and Osmond were read out.

​Osmond stopped teaching at the school February 15, 2013, when her full-time substitute teaching contract expired. A day later, Osmondtexted the student saying, "slow and intimate ... I hope we get to do it over and over again."

Crown prosecutor, Jaimie MacLean, asked Osmond if that was an appropriate text to send to a teenage boy she had just finished teaching.

At the time, Osmond said she didn't see their relationship like that. She believed that she was texting the man she was having a relationship with.

Osmond said in court that, while having a relationship with a former student wasn't appropriate or ethical, she believed she wasn't breaking the law at the time. She said at the time they had sex, he was a former student and above the age of consent.

MacLean continued to press Osmond on the age gap between the two, as well as their former teacher-student relationship.

"You were the adult in this situation," MacLean said. "You could have said, 'No, we need to stop this.'"

On Wednesday, the student was cross-examined. He said he felt conflicted about the relationship and was often looking for a way out.

Osmond has also testfied that her marriage was breaking down and she was drawn the student.

The case, which is being heard by a judge without a jury, will return to court in April when lawyers for the defence and the prosecution will make their final arguments.
