FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup: Canada's games on CBC

The FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup begins Tuesday in Edmonton and Toronto, and CBC Television viewers will get a front-row seat for each of Canada’s three group matches.

The Canadians open the tourney Tuesday vs. Ghana at BMO Field in Toronto, with a 30-minute pre-game show hosted by Andi Petrillo starting at 7:30 p.m. ET that includes analysis of the teams and players along with features on Canada’s players.

All tournament games will be live streamed at CBCSports.ca.

Nigel Reed and Dr. Clare Rustad will provide analysis of Canada’s games, with reporter Carly Agro on site.

“The players we’ll see throughout this tournament represent the future of women’s soccer in Canada and around the world and we’re proud to showcase their amazing talent to Canadians,” says Trevor Pilling, head of sports programming at CBC.

“The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup fits perfectly with our commitment to provide the best quality multi-platform coverage of major events like this that allow our audiences to get to know the amateur athletes that represent them throughout their journey to the highest level of their sport.”

The three-week tournament will feature four groups of four teams playing 32 matches across Canada in Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Moncton.

Each squad will play three games in the group stage, with the top two in each advancing to the quarter-final round (Aug. 16-17).

Finland and Korea DPR are the other teams in Group A with Canada and Ghana.

Canada’s best performance at this tournament was in 2002, the last time the event was hosted on home soil. The Canadians dropped a 1-0 decision to the United States in the final.

The Americans enter this year’s event as pre-tourney favourites along with Germany and North Korea.
