Fire causes 'substantial loss' at storage compound near Winnipeg

A fire at a storage compound just outside Winnipeg tore through a trailer and spread to a motorhome, a fifth-wheel camper, a boat and a vehicle.

"There's probably going to be a substantial loss," said Mike Palmer, chief of the fire department in the rural municipality of Rosser, just north of Winnipeg city limits.

Emergency crews were called to PB Rentals on Sturgeon Road just after 5 a.m. One of the business's storage units was on fire and the smoke was so thick at times that traffic on nearby roads was affected.

The fire was extinguished within an hour. The investigation into the cause continues.

There were no injuries, RCMP said.
