Fire flare-up threatens northern community

Wollaston Lake is about 840 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

Officials are scrambling to get residents of a northern Saskatchewan community to safety after a forest fire grew ten-fold in less than a day.

RCMP said Tuesday night that people from the Wollaston Lake area, including the Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation, were being taken out of the area.

The fire is about two kilometres from the community.

RCMP said it was first spotted on Monday afternoon when it was estimated to cover about 10 hectares of forest.

On Tuesday RCMP said the fire had grown to 100 hectares.

Fire crews are in the area, working to divert the fire away from the community.

Police did not say how many people were affected by the evacuation.
