Fish pedicures banned by B.C. health authority

A spa on Vancouver Island has been told to stop offering a pedicure treatment that uses live fish to clean the dead skin cells of the tender tootsies of its clients.

The Purple Orchid Spa in Duncan had been offering fish pedicures since last July. Clients place their feet in a fish tank and tiny Gurra rufa fish imported from Turkey pull off the dead skin cells, according to owner Dixie Simpson.

"The water soaks off the dead skin off your feet and the little fish come along and cup it off. They don't have any teeth," said Simpson.

Simpson says she contacted Health Canada before opening last year and they gave her the go-ahead.

But now the Vancouver Island Health Authority told her to stop or risk facing thousands of dollars in fines and possibly six months in jail.

"Vancouver Island Health Authority are now classifying my fish as tools. But these are live animals. I can't sterilize them. So therefore I have to shut down," she said.

A spokesperson with VIHA has said there are concerns around fish pedicures — including bacterial infections spreading from person to person.

Shannon Marshall says such fish spas are banned in three provinces and 14 states for good reason.

"Using the same fish to clean the skin of multiple clients could lead to the spread of infection from person to person," said Marshall.

But Simpson maintains her fish are clean because she uses a UV filtration system and she is appealing to her local MLA for help.

"It's a third of my business.... And I don't know how long I'll be able to sustain - you know - under those circumstances," said Simpson.

Maybe the Vancouver Island Health Authority should take a look at the filthy way the hospitals in this province are kept, instead of picking on people that are trying to keep a business going.
I had surgery last year, and was digusted with having to use a filthy toilet, and walk on floors that haven't been cleaned in ages.

But look how much money the hospital is saving :-(
Those poor hospitals CEO's are now getting a bonus for saving money (at least in Ontario)

I agree Allen, I had surgery last year also, stayed one night, and came home, not only with the surgery wound, but with a raging sinus infection as well, which was not there before I went in or they wouldn't have allowed the surgery...it's a good reason to get health conscious...just to avoid going to the hospital!

i dont see an issue until something happens and it becomes a problem. sounds like the government over reacting.

This is crazy, I've actually experienced this recently on a trip to Punta Cana and it was great! God damn our stupid Canadian governmental regulatory pussies...what a sterile, boring society we live in. Geezuz, kids can't even play tag at school anymore!

sounds like a bureaucratic turf war. the most likely places to get an infection are HOSPITALS.

Unle ss fish can carry human diseases(which would be a first in history) there is NO WAY to transfer infections from DEAD SKIN eaten by a fish from one person to another.....the potential from someone getting an infection from the water however is possible but insanely remote... and considering the woman is using UV lights to sterilize it, almost impossible! The Vancouver 'authority' should set their eyes on more relevant pursuits.

that's just weird , I can't imagine wanting my feet chewed on by fish .
As long as every client gets fresh water and they can prove the fish themselves are not able to spead bacteria I think it should be ok , but we have lots of scientific proof that what fish eat DOES affect the fishes health and can spread to humans ( like mercury in salmon or toxins in shellfish ) so I can see why they'd be concerned without proof it's 100% safe .

they don't chew on you, they have no teeth. These are special fish, not the ones you pull out of the river and eat. Sure wish people would learn something about a subject before posting. I have done this in Manila, it is safe, hygenic and no harm to people or fish

fish might suck on a heel that stepped on a syringe and that may transfer as the fish have unprotected sex and then clients will get like bass blood disease! and then we will have canada blood crisis all over again!! bahaaaaa!

... Great White Sharks are notorious for wanting to do the same thing but apparently they have an issue with media relations and always seem to get a bum rap whenever they try to help humans with that dead skin ....

Not for it, not against it, but how lazy and useless do you have to be to let fish "clean" your feet? This is just disgusting. If you are dirty and you stink then take a shower and clean your feet while you are at it. Unbelievable. Wouldn't want any of these spa monkeys walking bare-foot on my floors. Get out the Lysol honey.

Have you tried it? you have to clean your feet first before you can put them in the water with the fish, the fish just clean off the dead skin cells that we are shedding anyway every minute of every day, you just don't know it. I have tried it in Manila and it is clean, healthy and no one gets sick, just because someone hasn't tried it, you shouldn't knock it until you understand what you are talking about

canadian governments haven't found a way to profit off it yet, so that's why the controversy... just like most things in canada, say something is unsafe, link it to foreigners and the flag-waving xenophobia brigade will take up the cause from there....

hummmm, baby piranha and Gurra are nearly indistinguishable ... that is until they tear the skin off your bones ... think of the possibilities ...

I donot know about this procedure but is the tank cleaned EVERY time there is a new client?? it is true that hospitals have alot of "germs" floating around - well wash wash wash and keep everything clean -disgusting now a days. WASH YOUR HANDS and in this case wash your feet!!

Oh for crying out loud....Maybe they should ban and or regulate the use of cucumbers. You have more chance of getting E-Coli from a cucumber than getting a cross species skin infection from a fish.
    • majekin  •  10 months ago
I have done this in Manila, there is no risk to people - they have been using them for years and years - proven healthy. Millions of people there go and have it done and no one has gotten sick. The fish have no teeth, the water is filtered and it is the best way to clean your feet and they feel good and clean afterwards.
