Former teacher appears in court on child luring charges
A former Ottawa elementary school teacher charged with child luring over the internet from his home in North Gower made his first appearance in court Saturday morning.
Léon Beaulieu, 60, looked at reporters as he was being led into the courtroom. He crossed his arms during the brief appearance and said only his name.
Beaulieu is facing two counts of child luring using a computer, two counts of making sexually explicit material available to a child and two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
He was a teacher for a number of local school boards for more than 25 years, said Ottawa police in a release on Friday.
Beaulieu was charged following an online child luring investigation. A search warrant was also executed at his home where numerous electronic devices and firearms were seized.
The man's online resumé indicates he graduated from the University of Ottawa before teaching in high schools and elementary schools at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the Ottawa Carleton Catholic District School Board, the Upper Canada District School Board and other school boards across Ontario.
His most recent work ended in August 2011, according to the resumé, which also said he taught as a professor at his alma mater in the late 1980s.
Beaulieu's next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
