Hacked road sign curses Winnipeg drivers

A road sign meant to caution Winnipeg drivers about deer was hacked on the weekend and given a much more direct, and profane message.

The flashing message, that once stated "Be Alert For Deer" was reprogrammed with the message: "Slow The F-Down."

Brian Smiley, spokesman for Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), said he's not sure how someone could have hacked into the security system.

Winnipeg police have been notified and have said the person responsible, if found, will likely face mischief charges.

Twelve of the large flashing signs in deer hot zones were erected two weeks ago to get motorists to slow down. There are more deer-vehicle collisions in Winnipeg each year, about 410, than any other single municipality in Manitoba, according to MPI.

The Crown corporation is conducting the pilot project in partnership with the police through October and November.

The signs are along Roblin Boulevard and Wilkes Avenue from Shaftsbury Boulevard to the Perimeter Highway.

I like it ! It's undoubtedly much more effective than "Be Alert for Deer". Humour works. Dull, plodding, bureaucratic drivel - does not.

I work on the highways I wish I could put up the exact same sign! Motorists sure do not obey the ones we have now!

Slowing the F down is the best way to avoid deer collisions...they should keep the sign as is.

I think it's actually quite clever. I'm sure many slowed down just to read that sign lol

That's actually quite funny... there was never an actual swear word there so no kids would think too much of it ... and it was probably more effective at getting the drivers' attention too!

Was Einstein wrong - or was the cable loose?

GENEVA/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The world of science was upended last year when an experiment appeared to show one of Einstein's fundamental theories was wrong - but now the lab behind it says the result could have been caused by a loose cable. Physicists at the CERN research institute near Geneva appeared to contradict Albert Einstein's 1905 Special Theory of Relativity last year when they reported that sub-atomic particles called neutrinos could travel fractions of a second faster than light. ...
