Toronto police officer shoots suspect in leg

A man was shot when Toronto and York Region police tried to stop a car early Sunday in Scarborough. The man was taken into police custody after being treated in hospital.

A Toronto police officer shot a man in the leg early Sunday after he refused to pull over during a criminal investigation, Ontario's police watchdog says.

The 32-year-old man was treated at Scarborough General Hospital and is now under arrest, says a spokeswoman for the Special Investigations Unit, which was called in a few hours after the shooting.

Toronto police would not say what charges the man faces or why at least five plainclothes officers tried to stop his vehicle.

A second man was also arrested.

The shooting happened at about 3:30 a.m. at Pharmacy and Conroy avenues in Scarborough.

SIU spokeswoman Jasbir Brar told reporters at the scene that police in unmarked cars were conducting a criminal investigation when they tried to get the vehicle to stop.

"There was an interaction with a Toronto police officer, at which point the officer discharged his firearm at least once," she said.

Police from both Toronto and York Region were involved, but Brar said she couldn't say what they were investigating.

Nor could she say whether the driver who was shot was armed or provide other details about the shooting.

"That's again part of the investigation — what exactly was occurring at the time," she said.

Only the Toronto police officers will be witnesses in the SIU probe, she said.

A Toronto police spokesman would not discuss any aspect of the incident Sunday.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police in which civilians are killed, seriously injured or may have been sexually assaulted.

Six investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the agency said.
