NDG condo fire leaves dozens stranded
Dozens of families are out of a home Monday morning after a weekend fire in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood.
The fire began at 5 p.m. Sunday in a 42-unit condominium building at the corner of Somerled and Walkley Avenues.
Fire department operations chief Luc Robillard said it appears as if the flames might have started in an air conditioning unit on the roof of the building.
"When the firemen arrived, we didn't know the fire was on the roof. We thought maybe on the fourth floor," said Robillard.
He said firefighters contained the blaze in about one hour and none of the tenants was injured.
One firefighter had to be taken to hospital suffering from heat exhaustion due to fighting the fire in the hot weather.
Robillard said the building suffered a great deal of water damage and residents will not be able to return to their homes for at least a few days.
He said fire officials must inspect the electrical system in the building before anyone returns.
