Patrick Brown of Ottawa missing in Dominican Republic

The family of an Ottawa man missing in the Dominican Republic for four days says he needs immediate medical attention, but is avoiding search efforts.

Patrick Brown, 37, was on vacation with his parents in Puerto Plata, according to a statement from his family.

Brown is believed to be in the countryside surrounding Guananico.

His family says Brown was not kidnapped or coerced into hiding and has shown symptoms of "extreme paranoia."

But the family says he does not have a prior history of mental illness nor is he taking any medication for a mental illness.

Brown has military experience

Brown has been spotted several times near the search area but has evaded search efforts, his family said.

According to his family, Patrick Brown has military training from his time as a reservist with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. He also has experience with wilderness survival.

The family said it is trying to secure a rescue dog and air support to help the search but faces "severe limitations" in the Dominican Republic.

The family points anyone who can volunteer to the search page on Facebook. People can also contact Crime Stoppers in the Dominican Republic.

The Canadian Embassy, local officials and the federal government are also aiding in the search, as well, according to the family's statement.
