Rachel Notley says leaked email asks paramedics to pay for medical equipment

The NDP says Calgary paramedics have been asked to give money to pay for ambulance equipment.

Leader Rachel Notley says EMS workers were asked by a private foundation to donate a through a payroll deduction program.

"A few days ago EMS workers right here in Calgary received an email asking them to contribute to a new employee giving program. This program is asking paramedics to pay out of their own pockets for their own supplies for their own ambulances," Notley said.

The "leaked email," provided by the NDP, was addressed from the executive director of the EMS Foundation, and it appeals for employees to "join the cause" and contribute to the EMS Employee Giving Program.

"We are committed to providing programs that enhance patient care and purchasing equipment that help you do your job — and that helps our communities stay safe!"

The email states the money would go to support buying EMS equipment like Power-Load Bariatric Stretcher Systems, and towards foundation programs like Capsule of Life and Project Smile.

In a release, the NDP said the EMS budget for medical and surgical supplies was slashed by 64 per cent between 2009 and 2013.

"Paramedics need this equipment to do their jobs and their job is to save lives. They shouldn't have to pay for necessary equipment or turn to a charity to get it," read the release.

Alberta Health Services says it pays for all essential equipment in ambulances.

It says private foundation often ask staff and the public for voluntary donation to enhance patient care.
