RCMP confirm body of missing snowmobiler Margaret McCarthy found in Paul's Lake

Margaret McCarthy's family feels RCMP gave up too early in pond search

The RCMP have confirmed search and rescue divers were able to locate the body of Margaret McCarthy shortly before 11 p.m. Friday.

In a release issued Saturday morning, police said they were advised on Friday of a possible underwater sighting of the woman's remains in Paul's Lake, near Badger.

The lake has been the site of an underwater search for McCarthy, who had been missing for the last week.

McCarthy was last seen in the early hours of April 11, after leaving a friend's cabin in the area.

Friends discovered her snowmobile, helmet and glasses about a kilometre away from her lakeside home.

Police said McCarthy's body was found Friday night near a previously searched underwater area that had visual challenges.

Her remains have been taken to the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Care Centre.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating.

In Saturday's release, police acknowledged the assistance of many groups and local volunteers, in what was an extensive search effort.
