Rec centres, roads get upgrades with Mount Pearl capital works money

The Newfoundland and Labrador government and the City of Mount Pearl announced a plan to spend $19-million on capital works projects.The 70/30 cost share agreement will include repairing several roads, upgrading trails and fixing city facilities.Topsail Road, Commonwealth Avenue, Municipal Avenue, Sunrise Avenue, Blackmarsh Road, Hann Place, Hounsell Avenue, O’Keefe Avenue and Jeffers Place are all on the list of roads up for repair.Some of the cash will be funnelled into an assessment for the reuse of the former pool building and a transportation and utilities study.A large chuck of the fund — $2.8 million — will go towards infrastructure updates at Donovan's Industrial Park.Money is also earmarked for upgrades to St. David's Park, the Reid Centre, Admiralty House Annex, the tennis complex and Waterford River walking trails."It's significant because it will address a lot of major road infrastructure, in some residential neighbourhoods, but also on the main drags that go through Mount Pearl," said Mount Pearl North MHA Steve Kent."[They] are not just important for the residents of Mount Pearl, but are significant for the residents of the region as well."Some of the money announced on Tuesday was allocated a year ago.
