Rob Ford calls 911 after CBC comics visit home

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford called police after a crew from CBC's satirical show This Hour Has 22 Minutes showed up unexpectedly outside his house to interview him.

"I came out of my house and I was ambushed," Ford said.

Actress Mary Walsh, playing the character of journalist Marg Delahunty, was trying to interview Ford for a regular segment on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, in which Delahunty approaches politicians for surprise comedic interviews. Scores of Canadian politicians, including former Ontario premier Mike Harris, Quebec Premier Jean Charest and former prime minister Jean Chrétien, have been subjected to Walsh's surprise approach. Most try to endure the questions in Walsh's mock interviews with good humour.

But Ford was not laughing after Walsh's visit.

It was dark, Ford told reporters Monday evening, and two people who didn't identify themselves came running out of a car parked outside his home in Etobicoke and stopped him from getting into his car.

"There was a lady dressed up and she was screaming my name: 'We got you Rob Ford, we got you,'" Ford said, adding that his six-year-old daughter was frightened and went back into the home.

Ford said he went back into his house and called 911.

"I didn't know who they were and obviously I've had death threats and there was a camera and a mike," he said. "I'm open to the media, but when you come to my private house early in the morning and ambush me, I think that crosses the line."

CBC spokesman Chris Ball confirmed the show tried to interview Ford outside his home for an upcoming segment of the show.

"These surprise interviews are what 22 Minutes are known for and have been a part of the show for years," Ball said. "The interview began at the end of his driveway and concluded shortly thereafter. The crew had no interaction with the Toronto police."

Ah, for the days of Mel Lastman. Mr. Lastman may have been a buffoon, but Mr. Ford makes him look like a positive statesman in comparison.

So you'd be OK with unknowns showing up at your place at 5:30 in the morning and scaring the crap out of your family? Get real!
      • BoredomCorner 7 months ago
They're only unknown if you're in the dark.

Speaking of which, I've seen the clip of the ambush, and it was very bright outside, so it was A LOT later than 5:30 in the morning.

Hey jg, "way to waste tax dollars on 911 call". I don't know if you realize exactly how many tax dollars are wasted on 911 calls everyday throughout Canada. People call for colds, stubbed toes, you name it.

Toronto's Mayor, Rob Ford, has been caught at least twice...and written about in the media....by other drivers who observed him holding his cell phone to the ear while having a conversation with someone...while DRIVING his car on the busy Toronto streets!
No word about him ever being charged, even when a photo showed the proof.
He even gave the finger to a Lady and her young daughter when she motioned to him that he was caught!
It is ILLEGAL to be talking on a cell phone while driving!

haha .... that is too funny he called the cops ..... Mary would of had a microphone and there were a camera crew. Clearly he called 911 because he was annoyed, not because he thought he or his family was in any kind of danger. He really is an idiot!

The correct charge for Ford is public mischief. But he IS the mayor. Welcome to Tammany Hall, Toronto Style. Or maybe he's Boss Hogg.

Being stalked by Marg Delahunty is the best recognition a politician could hope for, but I shudder at the thought of Rob and Rick going skinny dipping.

Guess that's why he backed down from cutting the police budget, he wanted to make sure the money was there to protect himself in the event a "woman" with a "camera and mike" tried to hurt him.....HELLO...don't know if you're aware Ford but most criminals don't carry camera's.

911 Dispatcher - "Hello 911 What is your emergency"
Rob Ford- " There is a reporter outside who wants to speak to me. What should I do?"
911 Dispatcher - "Do what you usually do call your big brother Doug and have him handle it".
      Rob Ford- "Thanks I forgot".

His brother did not know who Margaret Atwood was, Ford did not know about This Hour Has 22 Minutes, They both just sit on the sofa watching American TV shows and getting fatter!

I watched 22 min last night just for curiosity. I found out that:
      a) it was not dark out at the time
      b) Walsh was in no way threatening, quite the opposite in fact
      c) Ford refused to talk to her, and stomped into his house like a 4 year old

    • SANITY_ MANIAC  •  7 months ago
I just saw the story and he was smiling the whole time. While he may have looked a little uncomfortable he was not scared or alarmed and his daughter was nowhere to be seen, besides that it was broad daylight. How can a supposedly sane man be afraid of a friendly woman dressed in a red Viking dress and holding a microphone?

I'm sorry, I'm not a real big fan of 22mins. Air farce was more my thing. If you don't recognize Delahunty you must be living under a rock. I don't buy that he didn't recognize her - You don't get to be 300lbs because you don't have time to watch TV.

He shouldn't have called 911. This wasn't an emergency call.
