Safeway, Canada Post warn of spoof scams

The Canada Safeway Ltd. grocery chain is warning customers in Western Canada about a phone scam that targets Safeway Club Card holders.

John Graham, Safeway's director of public affairs, said in a written statement on Friday that people in B.C. and Alberta have been receiving calls from either automated or live callers claiming to represent the company.

The callers make reference to club cards and reward points and claim that the target has won bonus points or some other sort of large prize. The caller then asks the target for personal credit card information.

Graham said Canada Safeway does not make unsolicited phone calls to request personal or financial information.

"Should you receive such a call, you should hang up the phone and advise your local law enforcement agency," he said.

While a number of complaints about the calls have surfaced, so far there are no known victims of this latest scam, Graham said.

Canada Post is also warning its customers about a scam — this time online.

Some people have received an email for tracking parcels that uses Canada Post's logo.

One email circulating advised recipients that a package had been shipped to them with the tracking number "RT094860142HK" and that an attachment in the email would allow them to track it. When the attachment in the email is opened, a virus could be installed on the user's computer and be used to gain access to the user's online banking information.

Canada Post says it never sends out these types of emails and that package tracking can be done through its website at canadapost.ca.
