Shot dogs recovering at Saskatoon SPCA

Two dogs which received gunshot wounds to the head in separate incidents are recovering at the Saskatoon SPCA, following treatment.

"It's not something that we see that often that's for sure," Tiffiny Koback, director of the SPCA, told CBC News Thursday. "It's a miracle for both of them."

Shelter staff have named the dogs Blue and Indigo Annie.

Blue was injured in the northern Saskatchewan community of Pelican Narrows. According to Koback, Blue was shot during a cull of feral dogs.

Two days after the cull, community members discovered that Blue survived the shooting but was clearly in distress.

They sought out the assistance of the RCMP, asking for the animal to be euthanized by an officer.

However, the police officers raised enough money to have the dog treated.

"A portion of his lower mandible (jaw) had to be removed as it was shattered from a shotgun shell," Koback explained.

Koback said as soon as Blue is well enough, he will be made available for adoption.

The other dog was discovered in a ditch beside the road near Clavet, Sask., about 30 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.

"The puppy ... was found to have been shot in the head by what is believed to have been a handgun," Koback said. "Indigo Annie sustained a hairline fracture to the mandible and hemorrhaging to one eye.

"This little girl is very lucky in that it appears that she will not need surgery at this time, and has a good prognosis," she added.

Both dogs were treated at the University of Saskatchewan small animal clinic.
