Sorcha Beirne, Fredericton teen activist, honoured with award

FHS dress code protesters suspended for 3 to 5 days

A Fredericton teen was recognized Saturday night for women’s rights activism in New Brunswick.

Sorcha Beirne, 17, received the YMCA Peace Medallion.

Beirne has founded the group the Fredericton Youth Feminists and is involved in Reproductive Justice New Brunswick.

She's helped organize protests, rallies and fundraisers for feminist issues, including fighting the closure of the province's only Morgantaler clinic.

Beirne says it's nice to have her worked recognized, even though not everyone may agree with it.

“That's not just nice for me, but for everybody who's involved in these issues. Especially as a young person, it's really nice to be recognized as a lot of young people aren't. A lot of young people aren't recognized in the same way that maybe adults are or they are not taken as seriously. So yeah, it's really important,” said Beirne.
