Tartan notice hasty: P.E.I. senator

A Liberal senator from P.E.I. feels the Harper government stole her thunder when it announced a new national symbol this week.

In a press release issued Wednesday, federal Heritage Minister James Moore put the Maple Leaf tartan up there with the coat-of-arms, the beaver and the flag.

Only a week ago, Senator Elizabeth Hubley proposed her own bill asking that the famous green-red-gold-and-brown plaid become Canada's official tartan.

Hubley warned the Heritage Minister that putting out a press release doesn't make the tartan official. She said the suggestion has to be passed by Parliament first.

"I was very surprised given the fact that a bill was moving through Parliament as he spoke," said Hubley. "I just wasn't sure why they would choose it this way — which is not an official way — when the official way was already in process."
