Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Feb. 27-Mar. 1)

Sunday is going to be the big day this weekend with a record show at Union Sound Hall, a rollerskating fundraiser for kittens and puppies and craft time for kidlets at Fort Whyte.

If you can get it together after work on Friday, there’s a Johnny Cash tribute show for $10, and if you’re light on cash, you can check out some short films for free at the Park Theatre.

Put on some warm clothes and go check some stuff out with someone who doesn’t annoy you.

WHAT: MUSIC – Times Changed does Johnny Cash

When: Friday night at 10 p.m.

Where: Times Change(d) at 234 Main St.

Cost: $10

Head down to Times Change(d) Friday night for a cozy night of Johnny Cash tunes on Friday.

They’re celebrating his birthday with a couple bands who will be playing actual Johnny Cash and one that will be playing a bit of country-punk stuff.

They’re also doing a Merle Haggard night on Saturday, if you’re less into Cash and more into country.

As always, nights at Times Change(d) pair well with whiskey and all your favourite people.

WHAT: FILM – Leviathan at Cinematheque

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday screenings

Where: Cinematheque at 100 Arthur St.

Cost: $9

If you’re thinking of staying in with Netflix and a box of wine this weekend, go to Cinematheque instead.

They’re screening a fairly interesting looking foreign film all weekend.

Leviathan is a Russian flick that won best screenplay at Cannes last year and is about a guy fighting a corrupt mayor to keep his home and business.

It’s kind of a David and Goliath story with Russian guys and guns set in a really beautiful town in Northern Russia.

You’ll be doing essentially the same thing as you would be at home, but you can tell people you saw a foreign film at an independent theatre and you definitely did not wear sweatpants.

Plus, you’ll be entertained and it’ll be over early enough for you to have a pint at the Kings Head after.

WHAT: SHOP – Central City Record Show at Union Sound Hall

When: Sunday, March 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Union Sound Hall at 110 Market Ave.

Cost: $2

This is pretty self-explanatory.

It’s a giant record sale at Union Sound Hall, and there will be tables and tables of records for you to peruse.

It’s $2 at the door, and there will be coffee from Café Postal if you’re still recovering from Saturday night.

There are going to be about 25 different vendors, a DJ playing some music and also apparently pizza.

Go early before it’s all picked over and then race home to have a super lazy Sunday and play all your new records.

WHAT: KID STUFF – Monster making at Fort Whyte Alive

When: Sunday, March 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Fort Whyte Alive at 1961 McCreary Rd.

Cost: $7 for adults, $5 kids

Take your super adorable offspring to Fort Whyte Alive this weekend so they can make a monster out of lint.

The wildlife preserve is doing a craft thing around 1 p.m. for kids, and it’s free with admission to the site.

The craft is basically using dryer lint and glue to make weird shaped little monsters.

I’m not sure about the googly eye situation, so to be safe you should just bring some from home.

If making a super cool lumpy monster from stuff that came out of the dryer doesn’t interest your petite minions, there’s also snow shoeing, skating and ice fishing at the site.

Also, let’s not pretend it wouldn’t be nice for YOU to close out your Sunday playing with little lint-monsters who want to eat Legos and conquer the Ninja Turtles. It would.

WHAT: ACTIVITY – Rock + roller skate at Wheelies

When: Sunday, March 1 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Where: Wheelies Roller Rink at 1010 Logan Ave.

Cost: $10

Before I try to convince you to go to a roller rink with your adult friends on a Sunday night, let me just paint a picture for you.

There are these little kittens and puppies, and they need homes. They make cute little mew-mew noises and also little yips and their tails wag and their cute little kitten eyes are always sleepy.

Oh, and they need your help in the form of cash and suppressing how embarrassed you are to be wobbling all over the place on roller skates as little kids zip by.

A no-kill rescue shelter for dogs and cats is holding a fundraiser at Wheelies Roller Rink Sunday night, and for $10 you can skate and listen to a bunch of talented ladies play rock music.

Mulligrub, Ghost Hole and The Help Wanteds are all playing. There will also be food, pinball machines and video games.

I am so excited, I don’t even really care if I accidentally take out a kid while roller skating my little heart out this weekend.
