Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (March 27-29)

My top pick for the weekend is Cluster Fest a music and art festival with a fun show Friday night, but a close second is Saturday night at the Cavern for a show with SC Mira and Go For The Eyes.

If you’ve got kids this weekend, you’ve got options. There’s a free circus fest at the Forks and a Roald Dahl show at the WSO.

Oh, and don’t forget Andy Kindler at the Park Theatre. He’s funny.

WHAT: MUSIC/ART - Cluster New Music Fest

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: aceart at 290 McDermot Ave.

Cost: $15 per event or $50 for a fest pass

My top pick this week is Cluster, a new music fest that combines art and music and everything lovely.

Basically, these are music shows with another component like video or dance or even video games.

Friday night Plumes is playing — they’re a bit of an indie-folk-classical crossover type deal and there’s a harp and violin in the band.

Plus there’s an important cellist playing some Icelandic folk poetry opening for them, so you can brag to all your friends about the cool super high-brow show you saw on Friday night after you go.

Most of the events are $15 (cheaper for students) and they’re all at the lovely aceart inc. in the Exchange.

Go check it out. It’ll be fun and new, plus it’s a one minute walk to Peasant Cookery where you can get some fancy drinks after and just feel super fancy and nice.

WHAT: COMEDY - Andy Kindler at the Park

When: Friday, March 27 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Park Theatre at 698 Osborne St.

Cost: $20

Andy Kindler is doing a set at the Park Theatre Friday night and it’s only $20!

You might not have heard of this guy, but you’d totally recognize his face and he’s done a ton of really cool stuff. He’s a regular on Bob’s Burgers (HELLO MORT!) has done spots on Tosh.0, worked on Home Movies and he’s done the late night show circuit a bunch too.

In short, he’s funny and super experienced in the comedy world, and whoever lured him to our frozen corner of the world deserves an award.

Show starts at 8 p.m., and super funny local guy John B. Duff is opening. Go have beers and behave yourself.

WHAT: FAMILY - Festival of Fools

When: Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: The Forks at 1 Forks Market Rd.

Cost: FREE

Kids like circus stuff right?

The Festival of Fools starts Saturday at the Forks, and it’s this thing for kids and families that has jugglers and acrobats and circus workshops and clowns.

Clowns aside, this seems like a pretty cute event to bring your little humans to.

The coolest thing to me sounds like the trapeze workshops. They’re on four times a day Saturday and Sunday.

Did I mention it’s all free?

WHAT: MUSIC - SC Mira plays The Cavern

When: Saturday, March 28 at

Where: The Cavern at 112 Osborne St.

Cost: $7

One of my favourite local duos is playing with a great little band from Calgary Saturday night at everyone’s favourite basement bar in the Village.

For $7 you can check out SC Mira and Go For The Eyes Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Go For The Eyes are billed as psychedelic, but I think they sound a bit more like Jack White/Black Keys sounding rock-indie band. Think a lot of reverb and catchy choruses.

Cavern is a bit of an odd venue to book these guys because it’s so tiny, and they just don’t seem to book these types of shows very often, so I think you should take advantage.

Also, I’d go early. I see this being kind of busy and the Cavern isn’t very big.

WHAT: KID STUFF - WSO does Jack and the Beanstalk

When: Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m.

Where: Centennial Concert Hall at 555 Main St.

Cost: $12

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is consistently doing cool stuff, you guys. This Sunday they’re doing Jack and the Beanstalk from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhyme.

They’re bringing in four actors, a bunch of puppets, a 60-foot beanstalk and playing along with them.

This beats the pants off of ice capades or swimming lessons or whatever thing people usually do with their kids on Sundays.

Plus, it’s reasonably priced and it’s going to be SO cool. The orchestra! Roald Dahl! What more could you want?
