Vancouver highrise flooded in act of vandalism
Police have arrested a man in connection with a damaging flood at a downtown Vancouver highrise that left residents mopping up after water coursed through their building and soaked several suites Monday evening.
A standpipe intended to be used only by firefighters was opened on the top floor of 35-storey The Max condominium tower on Beatty Street at about 5 p.m. PT, sending torrents of water down through the building.
The hallways and an unknown number of suites were damaged by water and some of the elevators were not working, one resident said.
“The concierge wasn’t able to get to it and it ran for about an hour,” said resident Andy Brar.
Brar said two bathrooms, the kitchen and the master bedroom in his suite were damaged.
“Some units are a lot worse than ours, though,” said Brar, who lives on the 33rd floor and on the side of the building that was less affected.
He said heaters and dehumidifiers have been put in many suites to start drying the units out.
It's not knonw if the man arrested was a resident of the building.
