New website guides families through legal maze of divorce and custody

People going through a divorce — and the legal maze that often follows — can get some help from an easy-to-understand website just launched for Saskatchewan.

The site, a project spearheaded by the Public Legal Education Association, is geared for people who can't afford a lawyer and don't qualify for legal aid.

The new website is tailored for Saskatchewan and asks people in plain language to answer questions about their situation. Using the answers, the site can fill in many legal forms associated with different family law matters relating to separation and divorce.

The site also contains useful information about family law in general. The site has information on many issues that come up when a relationship ends, including:

- Grounds for divorce.

- Child support guidelines.

- Spousal support.

- Parenting plans.

- Separation agreements.

- How family property is defined and divided.

"Our office deals with people on a daily basis who are unable to resolve family law issues because they cannot afford a lawyer and do not qualify for legal aid," Joel Janow, from PLEA, said in a statement.

The website stresses that family law can be complex and good legal advice, from a lawyer, is recommended. However, when that is just not possible, the website can help someone who has no representation.
