Winnipeg man faces new round of human trafficking charges

A Winnipeg man who is already charged in the human trafficking of a 25-year-old woman faces new charges after two more women came forward.

The 43-year-old man was arrested last month, following an investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service's counter-exploitation unit that began this past summer.

The original investigation involved a woman he had met in Winnipeg. They later travelled to Brandon, Man., where she was forced to work as an escort from March until mid-October of this year.

During that time, the man would advertise, for a fee, sexual services of the woman, police have said, adding he would threaten her with violence if she didn't perform.

On one occasion he did physically assault her, police said.

The two women who came forward following the initial arrest said the man used violence and threats to force them to work in the Brandon sex trade between May 1 and Oct. 15, according to police.

The man was taken back into custody and has been charged with a new count each of:

- Trafficking in persons.

- Material benefit resulting from trafficking in persons.

- Living the on avails of prostitution.

- Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

He has also been charged with two counts of assault and one count each of robbery and overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another person.

A police spokesperson said there was no previous history between the man and the two new victims.
