York Region police seek motorcyclist clocked at 180 km/h

A motorcyclist who was clocked at three times the posted speed limit in Markham last week managed to evade police, and investigators are now asking for the public's help to identify the driver.

The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. last Friday, when an officer parked on Warden Ave., near Cachet Parkway, noticed a motorcycle approaching at a high speed.

The officer clocked the motorcycle at 180 km/h, triple the posted limit of 60 km/h.

The officer turned on his lights and pulled onto the road to try to stop the motorcycle. But the driver, who police believe noticed the cruiser tailing him, made a U-turn through a red light at the next intersection and sped away in the opposite direction.

The force posted a short clip of the speeding suspect to YouTube in the hope that someone recognizes the bike.

Force catches several stunt drivers over long weekend

Over the Civic Holiday weekend, the force charged 18 drivers with impaired driving, four drivers with dangerous driving, and two drivers with stunt driving. In one incident, a BMW Z3 was clocked at over 165 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Bloomington Ave. in Whitchurch-Stouffville. The 27-year-old driver was charged with stunt driving and had his car impounded for seven days.

"Excessive speed has consistently been the greatest contributing factor in many fatal collisions that have occurred on York Region roads," York police said Tuesday in a news release.

Residents are asked to collect as much information as possible — including the make, model and licence plate number of the vehicle, as well as its location and direction — and call 911 if they see dangerous drivers on the roads.

Anyone with information about Friday's incident is asked to call the #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7541, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
