1 dead, 3 injured after gunfire in Montréal-Nord

Montreal police are investigating the shooting death of a 23-year-old man in Montréal-Nord.

The man's body was found in an alleyway near Lapierre Street, 20 minutes after police responded to another shooting incident that happened nearby.

Montreal police spokesperson Const. Raphaël Bergeron said officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Pierre Street and Matte Avenue at 9:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they found three men, aged 17, 26 and 42, who had all been shot in the lower body.

They were taken to hospital and are expected to recover fully.

Police say the two incidents are related, but they have not said how.

Men broke into apartment to hide

Bergeron said officers from the local police station are now going door to door in the neighbourhood where the shooting took place, to try to reassure residents.

René Gagné, who lives in an apartment building near Pierre Street and Matte Avenue, said one of the gunshots was inside the building, and then several men broke into his unit, looking for a place to hide.

"Two hid in my daughter's bedroom. Two left through the back [door]; one tried to get into my bathroom. After that, I said, 'You're getting out of here. I don't want this in my house,'" Gagné said.

He said one of the men lingered, trying to hide behind a curtain, but finally fled out the back door.
