Man dead after shooting in Weston Sunday afternoon
One man is dead after a shooting in Toronto's west end Sunday afternoon, police say.
Toronto police responded to reports of a shooting near Lawrence Avenue West and Ralph Street around 4:50 p.m. Sunday, the force said in a post on social media.
Police found one man who had been shot and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
There is a large police presence in the area, police say.
Det.-Sgt. Mike Taylor told reporters at the scene that he couldn't yet say if the shooting was targeted. Taylor said police are still trying to confirm the identity of the victim.
There was also no information about the suspect available, Taylor said. He's asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators.
Delroy Sherman, a local pastor, told CBC Toronto at the scene of the shooting that something needs to be done about gun crime in the area.
In late February, two men were shot and killed on Hickory Tree Road near Weston Road, not far from where the man was shot to death Sunday.
"This has gone too far now. Too many families are in distress," Sherman said. "Everybody's frustrated in this community."
C.R. Marchant Middle School, located near the site of Sunday's shooting, is closed Monday. In an email, TDSB Spokesperson Emma Moynihan said classes will take place virtually for the day, but the school is scheduled to reopen Tuesday "with supports in place for students, staff and families should they be required."
