Rush Hour (1998)

Rush Hour
Rush Hour
  • Duration: 98m

  • Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime

  • Stars: Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, Tom Wilkinson

  • Directed by: Brett Ratner

Not only can you watch the buddy cop action comedy movie Rush Hour on Tubi, you can also watch its two sequels: Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3. Sit back and relax for a trifecta of hilarity as Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker make a wonderful comedic duo. In the first movie, Chan is Chief Inspector Lee of the Royal Hong King Police Force, who ends up being partnered with LAPD detective James Carter (Tucker). Carter is punished with “babysitting” Lee, but figures he’ll show them by solving the very kidnapping case Lee was supposed to be investigating. As it turns out, however, Lee is far more equipped to handle the situations than Carter might realize.

Plenty of hilarity ensues as Carter tries to get the job done, with exciting action scenes that allow Chan to show off his incredible martial arts skills, handling his own stunts as he so often does. Yes, Rush Hour is formulaic and predictable, as many buddy cop movies are. But Rush Hour remains a classic in the popular sub-genre of action comedy films.

I, Robot (2004)

I, Robot
I, Robot
  • Duration: 115m

  • Genre: Action, Science Fiction

  • Stars: Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Alan Tudyk

  • Directed by: Alex Proyas

Perhaps far ahead of its time when the movie was released two decades ago, I, Robot might hit differently when watching today given the prevalence of AI and AI robots in the tech space now. The sci-fi action film is set in 2035, when highly intelligent robots have taken over public service jobs throughout the world. Among their chief laws is to keep humans safe, but as is ever the fear, a revolt begins.

Will Smith is Del Spooner, a homicide detective who has a particular distrust of these robots and their reliance on cold logic. As he investigates an alleged suicide of a prominent figure in the world of robotics, the situation gets messy, dangerous, and downright terrifying. A typically predictable movie in a sea of many Smith action flicks, I, Robot is one that will not only entertain but also encourage philosophical debates and conversation over the future and our continued reliance on robots and AI. Celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary by watching or re-watching this memorable sci-fi feast for the eyes.

The Other Guys (2010)

The Other Guys
The Other Guys
  • Duration: 107m

  • Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime

  • Stars: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes

  • Directed by: Adam McKay

The unlikely pairing of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in this buddy cop action comedy is a match made in comedic heaven. Directed and written by Adam McKay, who worked with Ferrell on other comedies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and its sequel, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Step Brothers, The Other Guys centers around two NYPD officers with very different personalities. Allen Gamble works behind the scenes as a forensic accountant while Terry Hoitz is a temperamental detective. At first, the two are handling very basic, cut-and-dry cases, but one soon explodes into a much bigger, more dangerous plot.

With a cast that also includes Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne Johnson, among others, The Other Guys is a really fun watch. The chemistry between Ferrell and Wahlberg is what makes the movie. Even though the focus is on comedy with plenty of laughs throughout, there are some pretty impressive and over-the-top action scenes, too.

Cast Away (2000)

Cast Away
Cast Away
  • Duration: 143m

  • Genre: Adventure, Drama

  • Stars: Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Chris Noth

  • Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

One of Tom Hanks’ most memorable performances, he literally carries almost the entire movie on his back as the sole person on an uninhabited island. Following a devastating plane crash, he is left to fend for himself. His only comfort comes from a tattered volleyball he names Wilson (due to its brand label) that he talks to as if it’s a person. Cast Away is a raw look at a man in decline, struggling to survive and refusing to give up, despite there being little hope of him ever being rescued. It’s as inspirational as it is entertaining, focusing on intense scenes of internal dialogue versus heavy action and complex effects.

Cast Away was a massive success when it was released and earned Hanks a Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award nomination. There hasn’t been a lot of movies like Cast Away since, and it remains a masterclass in both acting and simple storytelling.

The Suicide Squad
  • Duration: 132m

  • Genre: Action, Comedy, Adventure

  • Stars: Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena

  • Directed by: James Gunn

The Suicide Squad might not have performed as expected at the box office, largely due to its release during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the movie received generally positive reviews. After its cinematic release, the movie ended up becoming one of the most streamed DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movies on Max (known as HBO Max back then). If you’re a fan of the DC Comics universe and haven’t yet watched The Suicide Squad, or want to watch it again, you’ll be pleased to know you can do so for free.

The irreverent superhero film, the 10th in the DCEU, is about the formation of the group known as the Suicide Squad, which is made up of convicts who decide to join in exchange for a lighter sentence. Their mission: go to an island nation to destroy a giant alien starfish using their special strengths and, of course, a whole lot of violence. After watching this movie, check out Peacemaker on Max, which was developed as a spinoff series. There are two more spinoff series in development as well.

12 Angry Men (1957)

12 Angry Men
12 Angry Men
  • Duration: 97m

  • Genre: Drama

  • Stars: Martin Balsam, John Fiedler, Lee J. Cobb

  • Directed by: Sidney Lumet

From way back in 1957, 12 Angry Men is an interesting legal drama about a jury of a dozen men who must decide if a teenager charged with murder should be acquitted. As is typical with a jury in a controversial case with moving parts and moral ambiguity, they can’t seem to agree with one another. Each has his own values and thoughts and is steadfast in them.

Starring Henry Fonda, 12 Angry Men wasn’t a box office success. However, it received several Academy Award nominations, and many consider it one of the best movies ever made. The American Film Institute also names the movie the second-best courtroom drama ever (To Kill a Mockingbird is the first). It’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet.

  • Duration: 91m

  • Genre: Horror, Comedy

  • Stars: Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa

  • Directed by: Dan O'Bannon

A perfect watch in time for Halloween, The Return of the Living Dead is a comedy horror movie about zombies accidentally released into a small town. The story follows various main characters, including a warehouse owner and his employees, a mortician, and several teenagers, as they encounter the flesh-eating undead and do their best to thwart attacks.

One of the most influential movies in the zombie subgenre, The Return of the Living Dead was created by John Russo, who had originally worked on Night of the Living Dead with George A. Romero back in 1968. It’s silly, crinegy, and will satisfy your desire for gruesome scares.

Point Break (1991)

Point Break
Point Break
  • Duration: 122m

  • Genre: Action, Thriller, Crime

  • Stars: Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey

  • Directed by: Kathryn Bigelow

Since Keanu Reeves is enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to the latest John Wick movie, it’s the perfect time to look back at some of Reeves’ earlier action movies. In the early ‘90s, the now bona fide action hero starred in Point Break, a crime action movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

The movie, which also stars the late Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey, is about Johnny (Reeves), a former quarterback and rookie FBI agent who helps a more experienced agent Angelo (Busey) investigate a series of bank robberies by a group who wear rubber masks of former presidents. The suspicion is that the criminals are surfers, so Johnny is sent to go undercover in the community. It’s a role that was tailor-made for Reeves and marked a perfect transition from his more comedic roles (think the Bill & Ted movies) to the action films for which he later became known.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
  • Duration: 83m

  • Genre: Horror

  • Stars: Marilyn Burns, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain

  • Directed by: Tobe Hooper

As classic a slasher horror film as you’ll ever find, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is must-see viewing for any fan of the genre. There are no flashy special effects, nor gratuitously gruesome scenes. But it is a terrifying movie about a group of friends who become victims of a family of cannibals and a sick killer known as Leatherface.

The first blockbuster slasher film to use power tools as a central weapon, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is considered one of the most influential horror films ever made. What makes it even more impressive is that the movie was made on a relatively small budget with a core cast of mostly unknown actors.
