17-vehicle pileup on Bishop Grandin Boulevard blamed on icy roads

A 17-vehicle pileup on Bishop Grandin Boulevard that left one person with a minor injury, is being blamed on ice-slicked roads.

Emergency crews were called to the bridge on Bishop Grandin Boulevard, just west of River Road, at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday.

One girl suffered a minor concussion and was taken to hospital by her father.

Police say icy road conditions are a likely factor in the collision.

A number of roads in the area were blocked to traffic, says CBC videographer Michael Fazio. They have since been cleaned up.

Outside the city, the Trans-Canada Highway was closed in the vicinity of Portage la Prairie, Man., to the intersection with Highway 16 on the eastbound lanes at 9:45 p.m. due to a motor vehicle collision. It has now been reopened.

As well, the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada at MacGregor, Man., were closed because of a semi-trailer blocking the highway. The road is now open to traffic.

The incidents come as temperatures fell and snow started to fall across southern Manitoba on Wednesday.

In the afternoon, CBC journalist Holly Caruk reported nearly white-out conditions as she was driving near Neepawa, Man.

The weather has already prompted the Turtle Mountain School Division to cancel classes and bus service on Thursday due to poor road conditions and blowing snow.

Anyone planning to drive on the highways should check the Manitoba government's road conditions website.
