18-Year-Old Killed a Day After Graduating From High School: 'Her Smile Lit Up Every Room'

An 18-year-old was fatally shot a day after her high school graduation in Nashville.
According to WSMV-TV, an arrest report stated that police were called to a shooting at 1417 Hanson Drive on Saturday, May 25.
Per the outlet, the person who called police said the victim, identified as Lily Basil, had a gunshot wound to her right shoulder. The caller said they were taking the victim to the hospital.
Basil later died at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville after being taken by EMS.
The Franklin Police Department confirmed that 18-year-old Matthew Roufail has been arrested and charged with criminal homicide.
“FPD is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred Saturday night in the McKay’s Mill area. One person was killed. Police have arrested Matthew Roufail, 18,” the department wrote in a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). “He’s charged with criminal homicide. His bond is set at $150,000. Police believe this was an isolated incident. The investigation is ongoing. No additional details are available to pass along at this time.”

According to WSMV-TV, detectives were told Roufail left the scene of the shooting to go to the hospital. He was then taken in for questioning before allegedly confessing to the police that although he shot Basil it wasn’t intentional as he didn’t think the rifle was loaded, authorities claim, the outlet reports.
In a statement obtained by WSMV-TV, Page High School Principal Dr. Katie Hill paid tribute to the school’s late graduate.
“The Page High family mourns the loss of 2024 graduate Lily Basil,” the statement read. “Lily was a light; she was kind, sweet and extremely respectful. Her smile lit up every room she entered. Though she was newer to the Page community, she quickly embraced the Patriot spirit and was a friend to everyone she met. Page faculty, staff and students will dearly miss Lily, and we are committed to honoring her memory by sharing her light.”
Roufail was reportedly released on bail. It's not immediately clear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.
The news of Basil’s death comes after another teenager was killed after his graduation in Cincinnati last week. According to WLWT5, Lamon Wiggins, 18, was shot and killed just hours after his high school graduation.
