'Good progress' made on 2 forest fires in Miramichi region
Two forest fires in the Miramichi region, one in the Bartibog area just north of Miramichi and another north of Kouchibouquac, are now considered to be under control. But crews are battling three other forest fires near Chipman.
According to New Brunswick's Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development, ground crews are currently working on three fires about 30 kilometres northwest of Chipman that were reported Saturday afternoon.
The fires are within a few kilometres of each other, the department said in an emailed statement.
Two fires are small, with one one less than 0.2 hectares in size and another is less than one hectare.
A larger fire, approximately 20 to 30 hectares in size, is being attacked by the province's six waterbombers along with two larger waterbombers from Quebec.
The fires are in remote areas with no communities in danger, the department said.
The Miramichi area fires — which started on Thursday — are still producing smoke but there are no longer any open flames, said the department.
The Bartibog fire is estimated to be about 57 hectares in size, with the Hell's Gate fire at approximately 18 hectares. Neither fire has grown in size since Friday. Both fires are in remote areas with no communities in danger.
