2 homes destroyed by fire Friday in Inuvik, N.W.T.

A large fire in Inuvik, N.W.T., on Friday destroyed two homes in the community and killed a family pet.

The fire happened at the intersection of Reliance Street and Inuit Road late Friday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the fire around 5:30 p.m., according to a social media update from the Inuvik Fire Department.

At that point, one home was already severely damaged, the update said. The fire then spread an adjacent house. Both houses were destroyed, and some nearby homes sustained some damage from radiant heat.

Some occupants were in the homes at the time, but were able to escape. One family pet died in the fire, the department said.

"We ask that the community and others respect the privacy of those affected," the update said.

In total, 22 firefighters responded to the fire. Three responders were taken to the hospital because of possible heat-related issues, but all have been released and are well.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Inuvik Fire Department and the N.W.T. fire marshall's office are investigating.
