2 dead after head-on crash on March Road

A man and woman from Renfrew, Ont., are dead after a head-on crash in rural west Ottawa Sunday night.

It happened just before 9:30 p.m. on March Road, just south of Highway 417, in Carp.

Firefighters extricated two people from one of the vehicles, a man and woman believed to be in their 60s who were suffering from life-threatening injuries.

"Both of the patients went into cardiac arrest on scene or en route to hospital," said paramedic operations superintendent Stephen Leu in an interview.

One of the patients was taken to the Carp airport to meet an Ornge air ambulance because the helicopters don't land on roads at night for safety reasons, Leu said.

Douglas Foster, 69, and Joan Foster, 66, both of Renfrew, were later pronounced dead.

A 24-year-old man driving the second vehicle was taken to hospital with serious traumatic injuries, paramedics said. He was listed in serious condition upon arrival at hospital.

Ottawa police are investigating.
