Man, 21, dead; officer in hospital after police-involved shooting in Scarborough

Ontario's police watchdog has invoked its mandate after a 21-year-old man died in shooting involving a police officer in Scarborough Tuesday evening.

Toronto police say they were called around 8 p.m. for an incident at Midland Avenue and Midwest Road near Lawrence Avenue.

The Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Monica Hudon told reporters at the scene that officers with the gangs and guns unit had been investigating the driver of a vehicle and tried to bring it to a stop, before the shooting unfolded.

Hudon said the vehicle lurched forward and struck a police officer in the process. Three others were in the vehicle at the time.

Another officer opened fire, striking the man who later died in hospital.

Toronto police said the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the probe the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators by calling 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is called in when police are involved in an incident that results in a civilian's injury or death, or when police are facing allegations of sexual assault.
