2 sent to hospital after apartment kitchen fire

A fire in a Portage Avenue apartment sent two women to hospital Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to a fire on the third floor of an apartment complex near Mount Royal Road around 8:20 p.m.

A neighbour saw black smoke coming from the suite and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames in the kitchen before crews arrived.

A woman from the suite was taken to hospital in unstable condition with smoke inhalation and burns.

The woman spoke to CBC Wednesday morning and said the fire began while she was cooking a steak. The fire was confined to the stove, she said, but there was a lot of smoke. She was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation and said her hair was singed. She asked that her name not be used.

Her steak, she added, was burned to a crisp.

Fire officials said a second woman was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
