2 Winnipeg teens face charges in theft of bedbug-detecting dogs

Two teens are facing charges after an ambulance-style vehicle containing 10 bedbug-detecting dogs was stolen in mid-January.

A resident in the area of Parkville Drive called police on Jan. 19 when a group of dogs were seen running loose. Police arrived at about 6:30 a.m. and recovered eight dogs.

The ambulance-style vehicle that contained 10 dogs was stolen earlier in the morning from the 2900 block of Pembina Highway. Police located the vehicle at about 4:20 p.m. that day in the 400 block of Young Street.

Police also found the two remaining canine-detection dogs and returned all 10 to the owner.

Investigators spent the last two months trying to track down the suspects behind the theft. And on Monday, police arrested a 15-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl in connection with the incident.

The 15-year-old is facing charges for possessing stolen property. The 14-year-old is facing motor vehicle theft and animal neglect charges.

Both suspects were released on a promise to appear in court. Police anticipate making more arrests in connection with this case.
