Here are the 2023 Lexington All-City girls’ basketball teams and player of the year

The Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky.com are proud to present the 2023 All-City girls’ high school basketball teams and player of the year as voted on by the nine coaches of Lexington’s varsity KHSAA programs.

The Lexington Player of the Year goes to Sayre’s Kylee Dennis. The 5-foot-10 Southern Indiana signee narrowly edged Lexington Catholic’s Katherine Truitt as the top All-City vote-getter despite receiving one fewer first-place vote from the city’s coaches. Dennis averaged 28.7 points per game this season, the second-highest average in the state.

Truitt, a Kentucky soccer signee, has been on multiple first teams in basketball and soccer and was All-City soccer player of the year this past fall.

The rest of the All-City First Team honors went to Frederick Douglass’ Ayanna Darrington, Niah Rhodes and Jermyra Christian. Darrington received two votes for player of the year, while Rhodes and Christian each got one.

The nine varsity girls’ basketball coaches in Lexington were asked to nominate players for All-City consideration. Later, the coaches were asked to rank, one through 10, their top players from that list of nominees (they were not permitted to vote for their own players).

Point values were assigned to each voting position (10 points for first-place votes, nine points for second-place votes, etc.) and the accumulation of those points was used to create the first and second teams. Per tradition, each team is limited to three all-city honorees. First-team honorees are listed with voting totals plus first-place votes in parentheses.
