2024 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series

The nomination round of voting takes place from June 13 to June 24, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 17. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 15 and ends the night of August 26. The 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 15, and air live on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

Ultimately, the decision that “Shōgun” change Emmy categories affects the Drama races more than it does the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series race. There are still more than enough worthy contenders that can take its place when nominations are announced on July 17.

Unfortunately, the category still keeps the number of nominees proportional to the submissions, so though the limited or anthology series contenders are many of the starriest, most talked about shows of the season, only five of them can be nominated.

Looking through the options, it is clear that “Baby Reindeer” has built up momentum at the most ideal time, which was a surprise to even Netflix (the streaming service boasts 10 other shows vying for the same nomination.) Though everyone is quick to point out that the British series created and starring newcomer Richard Gadd launched with very little marketing, it does draw parallels to last season’s category winner “Beef” in that it launched on the platform in that early April sweet spot, and has a similarly pitch black comedic tone to it. Both shows embrace the half hour format, but veer into a sort of bleakness that audiences seem to really respond to.

With all that said, one of the overall themes this year had been a return to form for anthology series. FX brought back both “Fargo” and “Feud” this TV season, to much acclaim, while HBO stuck the landing with its latest iteration “True Detective” from new showrunner Issa López.

It has also been an even bigger year for literary adaptations, which tend to already crack into the race with projects like “Daisy Jones & the Six” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble” from last year. But thinking of the contenders that premiered earlier in the year, and got some winter awards attention, it has been shows like “Fellow Travelers” and “Lessons in Chemistry” that fall into that classification. And now series like “Expats,” “Ripley,” “The Sympathizer,” and even “Under the Bridge” have followed, gaining initial attention from fans of the books each series is based on.

Hot Streak: The last five years have seen Netflix and HBO trade off wins in the category, and before that it was HBO and FX trading off wins. If Netflix does pull off back-to-back Emmy wins for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, it will be the first time that has happened for a network in over a decade.
