The 2024 Lexington Herald-Leader All-State Girls Basketball Team is here

The Herald-Leader is proud to announce its 2024 All-State Girls Basketball Teams as voted on by high school coaches across the commonwealth.

For the third year in a row, Sacred Heart’s ZaKiyah Johnson topped our All-State list as Herald-Leader Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Johnson, a 6-foot forward ranked as a five-star recruit and the No. 5 junior in the nation by ESPN’s HoopGurlz ratings, led the Valkyries with 18.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in helping Sacred Heart to its fourth consecutive Girls’ Sweet 16 championship.

Johnson received 79 player of the year votes and appeared on 101 of the 106 All-State ballots submitted by Kentucky high school girls basketball coaches last week.

Second in the voting was Bethlehem’s Leah Macy, another 5-star junior who is ranked as the No. 8 recruit in the nation. Macy and this year’s Miss Basketball, Trinity Rowe of Pikeville, got six player of the year nods each. McCracken County’s Claire Johnson got seven top votes among All-State first-teamers.

In addition to ZaKiyah Johnson and Macy, fellow juniors Grace Mbugua of Danville Christian and Ciara Byars of George Rogers Clark made the first team. Seniors rounded out the list with Russell’s Shaelyn Steel, Sacred Heart’s Reagan Bender, Hart County’s Dea Bradley and Butler’s Marian Knight.

The Herald-Leader All-State Teams are based on coaches’ selections in a statewide survey conducted by the Lexington Herald-Leader/Kentucky.com. Players are listed in order of point totals based on coaches’ votes. There are three teams of 10 players, plus 20 honorable mentions.

Methodology: Our annual All-State survey was emailed to all 264 KHSAA girls basketball coaches in Kentucky using their email registered with the KHSAA. Multiple attempts were made to encourage every school to participate. Coaches were asked to select their top 10 players and points were assigned based on a player’s position on the ballot (10 points for Player of the Year, nine points for No. 2, eight points for No. 3, etc.), and tabulated across all ballots received. The top 50 players receiving votes made our All-State list. This year, 106 coaches participated and all 16 regions were represented.
