Cool Hand Luke (1967)

A prisoner sits on a car while smoking a cigarette.
Warner Bros.-Seven Arts

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” That iconic phrase from Cool Hand Luke cemented Paul Newman’s Luke as one of the leading antiheroes of the era. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, Cool Hand Luke stars Newman as Luke Jackson, a war veteran sentenced to two years in a Florida prison farm for destroying several parking meters. Despite the strict orders from the warden (Strother Martin), Luke immediately establishes himself as an outlaw who doesn’t follow the rules.

Luke’s rebellious antics lead to numerous trips to solitary confinement. However, his undying spirit and positivity win the respect of his fellow prisoners, including the lead inmate, Dragline (George Kennedy). A man can only take so much punishment before he breaks. Yet, Luke’s threshold for pain is unmeasurable, turning him into a folk hero within the prison. With his dashing good looks and award-winning smile, Newman lights up the screen as Luke becomes one of the actor’s defining roles.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)

A singer walks down the alley and sings.
Universal Pictures

If This Is Spinal Tap is the captain of music mockumentaries, then Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is one of the first lieutenants. The hilarious comedy stems from the minds of Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and Andy Samberg, better known as The Lonely Island. Conner Friel (Samberg) is a music prodigy and member of the Style Boyz, a rap group consisting of Conner and his two childhood friends, Lawrence Dunn (Schaffer) and Owen Bouchard (Taccone). Conner eventually leaves the band to start a solo career under a new name, “Conner 4 Real.”

Conner’s first album makes him a star, but his second album torpedoes his fame. Desperate to rebound, Conner must rehab his image to stay in the limelight. From the songs (Equal Rights is brilliant) and clothing to the pandering and cameos from real artists, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a brilliant satire of the music industry packed with a bevy of laughs and dumb jokes.

Swingers (1996)

Two men in suits sit down and play cards.
Miramax Films

If you’ve never seen Swingers, rest assured it is not about open marriages. The film is a nod to the swing music revival of the 1990s. Before directing Iron Man, Jon Favreau wrote the script for and starred in Swingers, his breakout role up to that point. Mike Peters (Favreau) is a struggling comedian who moved from New York to Los Angeles searching for his big break. Yet, Mike has found neither. He also hasn’t gotten over his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Nicole LaLoggia), who broke up with him six months prior.

In a time of need, Mike turns to aspiring actor “Double Down” Trent (Vince Vaughn), his charismatic and smooth-talking friend, who helps him get back on the horse and talk to women. Directed by Doug Liman, Swingers is a fun, witty movie, featuring great depictions of male friendships and relationships. Just remember that you’re so money, baby.
