5 Life Lessons That Working Moms Teach Their Kids

One thing that moms need to understand is that there is no perfect method of parenting. All mothers make the best of what the circumstances dictate.

But in the average Indian family, a new mom who goes for work is made to feel guilty. This leads to a phenomenon called ‘working mom guilt.’ It is associated with new moms who feel as if they are not doing their best when it comes to taking care of their kids because they are concentrating on work.

While some women can afford to stay at home, many families do not have the privilege of giving up the income of even one working parent. The working mom acts as a role model for the child who is growing up. Women don’t have to be around their kids all the time to teach them life lessons. A mom who goes to work teaches life lessons that leave a life-long impression, such as:

Kids learn about responsibility:

Working moms have to handle a lot of things, starting from sharing responsibilities with the husband or partner at home and completing projects in the office. Missing out on the responsibilities in even one of the areas can be disastrous for them. The kids who see this will realise that life comes with a lot of responsibilities and that they need to take it one day at a time. They will learn how to handle their responsibilities because they have seen an important figure in their life doing it day-in and day-out.

They learn that women can achieve anything:

Seeing a successful working mom being able to afford things for the family, growing in position every year, and keeping everyone happy makes them realise that hard work produces results. It will give them the belief that anything they want is possible. Working moms will also make them understand that women can achieve anything. It will act as an inspiration for girls, and will teach boys to respect women.

Prioritising your day:

Life forces us to set priorities while dealing with everyday things. A working mom teaches the kids what to prioritise and how to go about planning one’s day. It teaches the kids to be practical and not lose sight of the short-term and long-term goals in the future.

Respecting time:

Time is one aspect of life that can never be taken back. A working mom ensures that all the work in the house is completed on time so that they reach the office exactly at the time when they are expected. The mom knows that reaching the office late will not look good on her. So, she makes it a point to get up early in the morning to finish her chores. The child grows up learning that time is valuable and people judge you when you waste it.

They learn the value of skills:

The kids get to know that the reason their mom is able to bring in income to the family and buy them stuff is because she has the skills enabling people to pay her for her work. They learn that it is important to acquire skills so that you can be an important member of the society.

There is no better role model for a child than their mom. Every single thing that a parent does is mimicked by the kid. For the working mom, the key is in finding a balance between the kids and their work. The biggest lesson that a mom can teach one’s kid is letting them know that you will always be there for them no matter what.
