5 Nunavut communities share $1.6M in infrastructure cash

A new power plant for Qikiqtarjuaq and upgrades to Iqaluit’s water booster station are among five projects in Nunavut to share $1.6 million in federal funding from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.

Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced the contributions from the agency’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund Tuesday in Iqaluit.

"The upgrades are not only about providing better and safer infrastructure,” said Aglukkaq. “They also address the need of Nunavut population and take advantage of innovation."

CanNor will contribute $500,000 towards a nearly $9 million Qulliq Energy Corporation project to replace Qikiqtarjuaq’s power plant.

CanNor will also contribute $500,000 towards upgrades to Iqaluit’s water booster station. The City of Iqaluit is contributing $1.5 million.

Other projects to receive funding include renovations of Kugluktuk’s recreation complex and Chesterfield Inlet’s community complex, and an eco-ice system for the Baker Lake arena.
