5-year-old boy dies after he was struck while riding his bicycle

Stretch of Lake Shore Road where boy was killed 'a tragedy waiting to happen,' says safety advocate

A five-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle along Lake Shore Boulevard early Wednesday evening.

The child was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, but was later pronounced dead, Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said.

The boy had been on the cycling path along Lake Shore Boulevard shortly before 6:15 p.m. His bike shot forward and the boy fell onto the road, Stibbe said. He was then hit by a silver Toyota Camry.

An adult was with the boy at the time, but Stibbe wouldn't comment on the pair's relationship. A number of other bystanders tried to help the boy when he was injured, police say.

Investigators want to speak with all of those witnesses.

Traffic collision analysts are still taking photographs at the scene, but Stibbe said he expected the road to reopen by about 8:30 p.m.
