5 things to do in Edmonton this weekend
Once again, this weekend kicks off early with a Thursday night show - followed by a second chance to catch up on some of the city's most popular festivals along with some live music, avant-garde art and the chance to learn about "bronies."
What: Tonight is your last chance to see the best of those bits of television you often miss by going to the kitchen for a snack. The Cannes Lion award-winning World's Best Commercials are back at Metro Cinema. With more that 60 winning entries coming from 15 countries, these are the commercials that will make you laugh, cry and cringe in turn – and will definitely make you think about the world of advertising a bit differently.
When? June 26 at 9:15 p.m.
What: Ever wonder why a graffiti artist does it? Maybe you’re an avid boardgamer who is interested in learning how to turn that passion into a business? Or maybe you simply seek the answer to one of life’s most enduring questions: what exactly is a “brony”? These answers and more can be yours this weekend when you check out an expert from the 2014 Human Library, hosted by the Strathcona County Library. But don’t forget to call ahead and book your “book”!
When? June 27 from 4 to 8 p.m.
What: Multi-Grammy winner and Nashville superstar Steve Earle (with The Dukes) will be performing at Edmonton's Myer Horowitz Theatre Friday night, with opening band The Mastersons setting the mood. Earle was last in town in July 2013 as a headliner for Interstellar Rodeo. Tickets are going fast, though, so snap one up while you have the chance!
When? June 27 at 7:30 p.m.
What: This weekend, the Common Ground Arts Society is hosting the annual Found Festival – a four-day interdisciplinary arts festival which aims to take advantage of non-traditional spaces. Billing itself as a “living, breathing showcase of dance, theatre, visual art, music, creative writing and more,” festival organizers hope to bring Edmontonians provocative and innovative entertainment unlike anything you’ll see elsewhere or ever again, as the festival moves location every year -- this time it is taking over the alleyways and parks of Old Strathcona. The Works Art & Design Festival is still going strong, with performances across the city and exhibits and live music happening daily in Churchill Square.
For the jazz-lovers among you, there are still plenty of concerts coming your way this weekend as part of the Edmonton International Jazz Festival.
Canada's largest improv festival is going strong at the Citadel Theatre, so head downtown and cheer on the home team (Rapid Fire Theatre) and get your belly laughs in while you still can!
