$72M interchange at Bowfort Road and Highway 1 a 'game-changer' for northwest Calgary, councillor says
The new interchange at the Trans-Canada Highway and Bowfort Road N.W., which officially opened Thursday, creates a free-flow, uninterrupted entrance to Calgary, the city says.
The $71.7-million project in the city's northwest near the WinSport athletic facilities and Canada Olympic Park took two years to complete.
Ward 1 Coun. Ward Sutherland called the new interchange "a game-changer for the area."
"It makes it easier for people heading to WinSport and the Trinity development to the south, and the businesses and our communities to the north," he said.
"It's becoming a really active area for citizens and guests visiting the city."
About 60,000 vehicles pass through the area every day, a volume that the old infrastructure could no longer handle, the city says.
"This is the last of four interchange-related projects we're opening this summer," said Mayor Naheed Nenshi in a release.
"The city is completing 20 transportation projects this year, with a total investment of $400 million, that will have a major, positive impact on Calgary's road and pedestrian network."
