Airdrie crash victim dies at hospital after highway collision
An elderly woman has died in hospital this afternoon after a crash about 25 kilometres east of Airdrie.
Cam Heke with STARS air ambulance says it happened around 10:30 a.m. MT when a semi-truck collided with another vehicle at Highway 9 and Highway 566.
"Initial investigation reveals that the passenger car crossed the path of an oncoming semi-truck, resulting in a serious collision," said RCMP in a release. "No charges are being considered."
The man driving the car, who was is in his mid-70s, went to hospital in serious but stable condition.
A female passenger with multiple traumatic injuries needed to be extricated from the vehicle, which had profound damage to the passenger side.
She was transported in critical, life-threatening condition to a Calgary hospital, but died shortly after arrival.
The driver of the semi-truck, a man in his mid-40s, was treated at the scene by paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries.
The area was closed to traffic temporarily as officials investigated the crash. At the request of family, no names of those involved will be released.
