Alberta dog found in Manitoba, missing more than 6 months

A dog from Alberta who had been missing for more than six months was found in Manitoba and reunited with his owner.

The dog named Rocky was turned in to the Winnipeg Humane Society on April 20, after he was spotted in Stonewall, Man.

Staff at the animal shelter said the dog had a microchip which helped them track down the owner in Calgary — about 1,350 kilometres away from Stonewall.

It turns out Rocky had been missing since Oct. 15, 2014.

Rocky's owner, Shauna Doyle, told CBC News she was at work when she got a call from staff at the Winnipeg Humane Society on Monday, saying Rocky had been found.

"My phone rang and I, like, completely burst into tears, and my co-worker is rapidly handing me Kleenex while I'm on the phone crying, because they're like, 'Oh, we found your dog,' and I'm like, 'Oh my God, I'm so happy!'" Doyle said.

Doyle drove all the way from Calgary to Winnipeg with a friend on Wednesday to pick him up at the shelter.

She said it was a very happy reunion.

"I just said, 'Hey, baby!' He looks at me, and I'm in a hunched position because I don't want him jumping on my stomach because I'm only 4½ months pregnant," Doyle said.

"He completely threw me onto my back and was like licking the crap out of me!"

Doyle said she had no idea how Rocky ended up in Manitoba.

"It's a complete mystery, but I'm just glad that he's safe and sound and not roadkill," she said, adding that she never gave up hope that Rocky would be found one day.

Officials at the Winnipeg Humane Society give credit to the microchip that Rocky had. Staff want to remind pet owners about the importance of keeping their identification information up to date.
