Jonas Budd, suspect in abduction and fatal shooting, located in Saskatchewan

Jonas Budd, Saskatchewan Amber Alert suspect, charged with murder, kidnapping

RCMP say they have surrounded a home in Sturgeon Landing, Sask., and are in contact with Jonas Budd, the suspect in an abduction and fatal shooting that took place on the Lac La Ronge First Nations reserve Wednesday.

Police issued a statement at 11 a.m. CST Thursday, saying Budd was not yet in police custody, but officers were talking to him.

Six hours later, RCMP said officers were still at the scene and no additional updates were available.

Budd, 43, is wanted in connection with the death of Dustin Bird, 17, and the abduction of his ex-spouse's 17-year-old daughter, which led police to issue an Amber Alert for the girl yesterday. It was called off when she was found safe, in a rural area of Saskatchewan, by members of the Cranberry Portage RCMP based in Manitoba.

The two teens were apparently in a relationship.

Police believe Budd is in possession of a rifle and is considered dangerous.

Sturgeon Landing is close to the Manitoba border, about 120 kilometres south of Flin Flon. The Lac La Ronge reserve where the crimes were committed is about 380 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

Sister anxious to contact Budd

Joyce Budd, the suspect's sister, told CBC News Thursday that she has been asking RCMP to allow her to speak to the man. She said she has been parked on the highway junction that leads to Sturgeon Landing since Wednesday.

The highway is about 28 kilometres from the community itself.

She said she believes Budd will listen to her.

"Me and my brother are close," Budd said. "When we were kids and no one took care of us, we took care of each other and he would listen to me. I've asked the police to let me go and talk to him."

Budd has been posting updates to her own Facebook account indicating she believes her brother is inside a home in a wooded area. Images published to her account show a heavy police presence.
