Amid Cancer Treatment, King Charles Attends His Second Trooping the Colour as Monarch

King Charles isn't letting his health slow him down.

Today, the King attended Trooping the Colour—his annual birthday parade—and was all smiles. This year marks a slight change from his first Trooping; instead of riding on a horseback in a parade, he rode in a carriage alongside his wife, Queen Camilla. The royal couple rode in the Scottish State Coach:

In February, Buckingham Palace shared the news of King Charles's cancer diagnosis, and he returned to work in early May. Despite the fact that he's back carrying out public engagements, his plans still remain subject to his "doctors' advice nearer the time, with appropriate adaptations made where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery," per a Buckingham Palace spokesperson.

In addition, in light of the upcoming UK general election, the royal family postponed numerous engagements, but Trooping the Colour was one of the events that still went ahead, along with the upcoming Japan state visit by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, which will take place later this month.

Buckingham Palace has never disclosed any details of what kind of cancer King Charles has, or any details regarding the treatment he has been receiving, and it's unlikely they will ever share that information. His daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, is also undergoing cancer treatment currently, and Kensington Palace has been similarly quiet on any questions regarding her specific diagnosis.

This year's Trooping was a major event, as the Princess of Wales made her first public appearance of 2024 after being out of the spotlight since this past December. (Her attendance does not signify a return to royal duties, however.) Yesterday, after Kensington Palace announced Kate would be in attendance, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, "His Majesty is delighted that The Princess is able to attend tomorrow’s events, and is much looking forward to all elements of the day."
