Amon-Ra St. Brown's parents, Miriam and John Brown, couldn’t be prouder of their youngest son.

The wide receiver from the University of Southern California, and his brothers, Equanimeous and Osiris, come from a football family. Amon-Ra was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2021 and has become one of the hottest young playmakers in the league.

The wideout, nicknamed the “Sun God” because of his Egyptian-inspired name, has earned two Pro Bowl nods and was a 2023 first-team All-Pro selection. He and the Lions fell just one game shy of making an appearance in the 2024 Super Bowl. After the season, in April 2024, Amon-Ra signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the Lions, making him the highest-paid receiver in the league.

During the Lions 2024 playoff run, the Browns were asked what words they wanted to leave their son with.

“I'm very proud of you, extremely proud,” Miriam told Click On Detroit. “That's all I can say and you know it.” John added, “I always just say I love you, we're proud of you [and] continue the good work."

From meeting in Germany to training their sons, here's everything to know about Amon-Ra St. Brown's parents, Miriam and John Brown.

John grew up in Compton, Calif., where he played football at Compton Dominguez High School.

During his frequent travels abroad for bodybuilding competitions, he met and married Miriam Steyer from Leverkusen, Germany. The couple later settled in California.

In addition to Amon-Ra, the Browns have two other sons.

Equanimeous, a.k.a. EQ, is the oldest of the three, born on Sept. 30, 1996. He played football at Servite High School in Anaheim, Calif., before enrolling at the University of Notre Dame. Equanimeous was taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He is now a wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints.

John and Miriam's middle child, Osiris, was born on April 28, 1998. He played football at Mater Dei High School and also lettered in track, per his Stanford University bio. Osiris majored in science, technology and society and played wide receiver at the college.

Amon-Ra is the youngest of the three St. Brown brothers, born on Oct. 24, 1999. Having a house full of athletes wasn't always easy for John and Miriam but they are proud of their sons.

“Out of everything they've accomplished, the thing I'm most proud of is they're gentlemen and they're tight,” John shared in an interview with Click On Detroit in 2024.

“Three little boys was not easy sometimes,” added Miriam, “but they turned out to be okay.”

John was a competitive bodybuilder

Like his sons, John started out on the football field but he quickly found a new passion. He got into weightlifting at age 14 and by 16, he competed in the famed Mr. Watts contest. John’s third-place finish motivated him to commit to the sport completely and his hard work paid off. John would take home the Amateur Mr. Universe crown in 1981 and 1982 and a total of three Mr. World titles.

When his sons came along, the champion bodybuilder started introducing them to weightlifting with light PVC pipes to instill proper form. They later progressed to regular bars and dumbbells.

“Other people thought I was crazy,” John admitted in an interview with Yahoo Sports in 2022. “Some guy in the 1920s said that lifting weights early stunts your growth and everyone believed him."

With a relatively popular name like John Brown, the family patriarch was determined to set his boys apart.

“My name was very mundane,” he told Yahoo Sports in 2022. “I didn’t want that for them.”

The former bodybuilder chose the name Equanimeous for his firstborn based on a character from a friend’s book. For his next two sons, John turned to Egyptian mythology. Osiris is the Egyptian god of the underworld and Ra is the Egyptian sun god.

John added St. to Brown because he thought it would look cooler on the back of his boys’ jerseys. He shared the rationale behind the name with his sons when they were very young.

“I explained that to them when they were probably like 2 years old,” he shared in a 2021 ESPN interview. “I would tell them to line up. I would blow a whistle, and that means toe to line ... Hands to the side, head straight while I’m talking to them, because there’s moments in life where I need my sons' undivided attention to explain certain things in life.”

Miriam taught her sons multiple languages

Miriam was the family educator, and she wanted the boys to earn straight A’s and be trilingual. She spoke German with her sons, and John conversed with them in English, though he could speak German as well. Miriam did not deviate from her plan, even when the St. Browns had American friends over to the house.

“I didn’t care if their friends understood what I was saying,” she told Yahoo Sports in 2022. “I told the boys they could translate later.”

Miriam enrolled her sons in a French academy in Los Angeles when they were old enough to start elementary school. She later took all three boys to Paris to spend a semester at a French school.

“I didn't really care,” Amon-Ra told Rivals in 2015 when reflecting on leaving California for the immersive experience in France. “I didn't have many friends at the time so I just went along with it.”

“It was never a question to me when I came here that my children should speak different languages,” Miriam told Rivals.

John created a protein powder for his sons

Amon-Ra and his brothers were very active young athletes who regularly weightlifted. When John realized that his boys were not getting enough protein from their regular meals to match their high-energy activities, he set out to make a protein supplement suitable for young athletes.

Originally, Cane Protein was just for the family, but John eventually started selling the product. The brand's Instagram often features Amon-Ra and his brother Equanimeous as part of their marketing.
